A tribute to education, history and culture

the hotel

A building with character that tells an ongoing story from five centuries ago. After all the alterations in its interior and usage, it has been renovated in a way that integrates and highlights its unique identity in the greater area.

Both the surrounding area and the building are a direct result of a multicultural blend, combining aspects of the Greek, Italian and Turkish culture. The internal structure throughout the centuries has been either maintained or restored, conveying the essence of every era this building has witnessed and endured.

 

Stone and wood are the main structural materials that one can see throughout the building, creating a warm and inviting environment for every guest. The lobby area has been shaped in a way that reflects the hospitality values and the quality of service, while in the patio you can enjoy every part of the day with a book, your breakfast or a glass of wine in the afternoon.

 

The decoration of the building contributes to its value as it complements it both in usability and aesthetics. With custom made interior design items and after careful and eclectic selections, all the rooms and the common spaces have been decorated so as to bring out the essence of nostalgia of experiences yet to live.

the history

In Malmo Historic Hotel the guests enter a place that transcends the conventional accommodation experience, as it is an ode to education, history and culture. Having survived more than five centuries, this hotel is a manifestation of adaptability and resilience. At the same time some of the most significant personalities of Greek and Cretan history have been inside this building, to stay, work or simply just to visit it.

Malmo Historic Hotel is located at the center of the Chania old town, at the Venetian district of Ponte dei Viari. The hotel probably was part of the Latin monastery ‘Santa Maria della Misericordia’ of the Order of the Augustinian Recollects, which was built around the half of the 16th century.

 

After the city was occupied by the Ottomans in 1645, the building was turned into mansions, and remained as such till the first decades of the 20th century, by which point the building had added one more identity to its history by becoming a library.

 

From the 50′, the building was used as a library, known to the locals as the Malmios Library, founded by Antonio Malmo, a man that loved arts. In 2007 a fire destroyed the wooden interior of the building but the main structure remained without significant damages. In 2019 the restoration process started, leading to the building of today. The building of Malmo Historic Hotel is one of the local landmarks and aspires to be a source of inspiration to its guests, with its high level of services and by preserving its glory.

 

A grand journey in time is condensed in a series of seven suites, each one of which has been named after historical monuments and landmarks of the city as well the history of the building itself, creating an unwritten script of cultural value.

 

The arch that connects the two parts of the building, on which one of the rooms stand, is a defining aspect of the Venetian architecture. This arch, along with Malmios Library, inspired the logo design and the decoration.

 

This way, with Malmo Historic Hotel, the arches and the books of Antonio Malmo remain open.

the man behind the name

Antonio Malmo, a Cretan with Italian and Maltese descent, was a man that combined education with culture. As a passionate lover of the arts, his obsession for books collection led him to the foundation of Malmios Library in 1928, at the building where Malmo Historic Hotel is now housed. For more than four decades this space was a hive of culture, in which multiple fermentations of arts and education took place.

Antonio Malmo was a man with a vision, and everything he created aimed at the personal development and the sharpening of the mind. Through knowledge, books and the journey through their pages, he created a spark of culture which inspired an entire city.

 

With this library, Antonio Malmo achieved the integration of multiple eras and personalities throughout five centuries, each one with a separate, unique storyline, at the basis of which lies the man, in his most universal form.

 

The blazon of Antonio Malmo completes this journey through time, books and buildings, with the inscription that reads “do not forget you are human”, reminding us that no matter where we come from, our destination should always be humanity.
